NOTE: (2010-12-31) - 23:56b-24:12 - The women at the Tomb on the 3rdday, were frightened by the two men in dazzling clothes. In 24:23 the two on the road to Emmaus told Jesus that the women reported to the eleven that they were angels. Church tradition often sees angels as women or cherubs. In the Scriptures we only find them in the appearance of men. Isn't it odd how traditions creep into the Word of God, and we end up believing the traditions more than the Scriptures? Jesus says in Matthew 15 that we make voidthe Word of God by our traditions. The pure word of God is like manna. We get tired of it, and want something different and exciting. Much better for us to stick with the pure word of God - nottaking from it (like the Sadducees), nor adding to it (like the Pharisees - through the Talmud and Mishna). We need to remember the acronym KISS- Keep It Simple (pure), Sweetie!

The apostles did not receive the women's report! Jesus later rebuked them for their unbelief. They should have believed the women, to whom Jesus revealed Himself first in His Resurrection state! Faith is an act of the will! We can chooseto believe, or reject the evidence and testimony.

24:13-32 - This account of the two on the Road to Emmaus has very practical lessons for us. We are now on “Resurrection” ground. Apart from Jesus' resurrection, our faith would be void, says the Spirit through the apostle Paul. “Jesus is Risen” - was a common greeting by those in the early church. One friend of ours from Lebanon says that we all ought to live as if “Jesus died yesterday - Rose today - and is returning tomorrow!” Such a way of living would change us drastically!

Jesus in His Resurrection body, is much different than prior to His Crucifixion. He said - “I have a baptism to be baptized with (His death) - and howam I hemmed in until that takes place.” But following His Resurrection - after 40 days - He ascended to heaven, and 10 days later from the Father - poured out the Holy Spirit uponus on the Day of Pentecost. Jesus has notbeen hemmed in since. Yet, the Kingdom today is invisible to the world - it is inwardin us by the Holy Spirit. Upon Christ's return it will be visible- and as Lord of lords and King of kings - no onewill then be in any doubt concerning the Lordship of Jesus over His earthly Kingdom for 1000 years. It is this visible, manifested Kingdom that we pray for in the Lord's prayer - when we pray to our Heavenly Father - Your Kingdom Come!

Then notice how Jesus brought the Emmaus two up to date in understanding the necessity of His Death and Resurrection. He reasoned from the Scriptures, applying them to Himself - as God's Messiah! He went through Moses and the Pentateuch - the Jewish Torah - then the Prophets, and lastly the Writings. These contain the 24 books of the OT (equivalent to the 39 of the church) - and Jews still follow the order Jesus used here. Our Reading Guide - “Through the Bible in a Year” - will soon appear on our Website, and follows this order in the OT, and the Bible Numeric order in the New. This also confirms the correctness of the Jewish order. Why we in the church changed the OT order I have not been able to establish - but I can guess.

Notice too the nature of Jesus' Resurrection Body - He could appear and disappear at will. He could put a holding on our eyes so that we cannot recognize Him until he chooses. He can eat - and when we receive our Resurrection bodies at the Return of Jesus - we will then join Him in these unusual manifestations. J.A.W.
